WELLBORN SUD NEWSLETTER – February 2026

Building Capacity Today to Protect Reliability Tomorrow

Dear Wellborn SUD Customers,

As 2026 gets underway, we want to share an update on the major water system investments now in progress—and why this work matters for the long-term reliability of your water service.

2025 in Review: From Planning to Progress

Over the past year, Wellborn SUD moved critical water supply investments from planning into action. With Board oversight and community support, the District advanced major approvals, secured construction contracts, and began work on infrastructure designed to serve customers reliably for decades.

These efforts reflect a clear focus: protecting water service today while preparing for continued growth and demand.

Construction Update: Major Projects Moving Forward

Work is now underway across the core components of the Water Supply Project—together designed to more than double Wellborn SUD’s water supply capacity once complete.

New Wells

  • Drilling has begun on one of the new wells located northeast of Lake Bryan
  • Crews have completed drilling the test hole at a depth of 3,000 feet
  • Once completed, the new well field will significantly expand local groundwater supply and improve long-term reliability

Water Treatment Plant

  • The Texas Water Development Board has issued a Notice to Proceed for the Treatment Plant Project! The contractor, Dudley Construction, is mobilizing equipment now.
  • This facility will allow Wellborn SUD to safely treat and deliver new water supplies to customers

Transmission Line

  • The pipeline will allow us to move the water from the new wellfield over 11 miles south to our existing distribution system, giving our community a secure, expandable, independent, and drought-resistant source of supply.
  • Engineering and approvals are nearing completion
  • The project is expected to be advertised for construction bids soon

According to project engineers, the full system remains on track for completion by May 2027, pending construction and regulatory timelines.

These projects respond to real capacity constraints already facing the system and are designed to protect reliability and affordability as the service area continues to grow.

Why This Investment Matters

At its most recent meeting, the Board approved an order for a bond sale to secure the remaining funding needed to complete the project as intended.

The recent rate increase was designed to support this work, ensuring Wellborn SUD can:

  • Build the infrastructure required to meet future demand
  • Reduce reliance on emergency and supplemental water sources
  • Maintain local control over water supply and system performance

We remain committed to transparency and will continue to share updates as construction and financing move forward.

Commitment You Don’t Always See

Our staff’s dedication reflects their professionalism and commitment to serving our community every day.  Wellborn SUD has an immediate repair policy for all leaks that result in service interruptions.  You can rest assured that if your water is out, our licensed Water Operators are on-site, working hard to restore water service – no matter the time or conditions.  They won’t go home until everyone is back in water, even if it’s past midnight, 19 degrees, and sleeting, like in this picture from a late-night repair during the freeze at the end of January.

Looking Ahead

These projects represent the most significant investment in Wellborn SUD’s history. They are about more than infrastructure—they are about ensuring safe, reliable water for homes, businesses, and families as our region grows.

Thank you for your continued trust and partnership.

Sincerely,
Wellborn Special Utility District
